This is a dark and deeply disturbing work of fiction (at least I hope it’s fiction), taking us directly into the mind of a suicidal young girl.It’s very short, at just 32 pages, and can be devoured in a single sitting. The narrative begins by telling us of the best days in her short life, before taking us on her descending journey into despair, where death is her only hope, skilfully chronicling the reasons why she feels as she does.
The font and layout make this book look exactly like a scrawled diary, including many crossings out and illustrations…and this aspect cleverly takes us closer to Shannon.
A most unusual and quirky book, telling a powerful story with some incredibly moving sentences – three of which really stood out for me: “May the best of your todays be the worst of your tomorrows”; “I can’t control my thoughts and they’re getting out of hand”; And the very final line, which I’m not going to spoil by revealing here – you’ll simply have to purchase Shannon’s Diary: The Death Wish, for yourself, to read that incredible last line.
This book is innovative and experimental, and deserves its five stars for the powerful and moving way it delivers is stark and agonizing message.
